While perusing the Fairfield County Sheriff's site listing foreclosed properties coming up for auction, I was surprised to see the old Billy Crickets building on Memorial Drive listed as a foreclosed property. I was under the impression that the reason Billy Smith and his restaurant left the building was because they were unable or unwilling to pay higher rent sought by the landlords. Ostensibly, the landlord was willing to let them go because they had a better offer waiting in the wings. I had even heard rumor that a national chain was interested in buying the property and placing a fast food restaurant on the site.
The appearance of the property at a sheriff's sales mean either all of that information was bunk or things have simply taken a drastic turn in the past year. Anyone have any inside information?
Whatever happens, I am still sad that BIlly Crickets was forced to close and that Billy Smith did not open a restaurant at any of the other locations he owned throughout town. There is a severe dearth of nice, independent restaurants around Lancaster; even though there seems to be significant demand.
For those of you who are interested, the sale will be held on the 27th of July at the Fairfield County Courthouse. The appraised value is $960,000. Bidding at sheriff's sales starts at 2/3 of the appraised value which means you may be able to grab the thing for just over $600,000. Open a nice restaurant and I promise I'll visit.
